When the drum beat changes, so must the dance - African proverb

The students of PHS returned to campus for the 2012 school year on January 14. Peace House Africa is pleased that they are back in class and continuing their education, but the new school year brings with it some unwelcome changes at PHS. Please click on “the school” for the full report and learn what Peace House Africa is doing to ensure orphans and vulnerable children have hope for an education.

Since 2001, over 800 students have benefited from Peace House Africa's programs. They all share one remarkable quality in common: resilience. These children, orphaned and otherwise vulnerable, have suffered profound tragedies in their young lives. Most have lost at least one parent, often both. Some had been turned away by guardians and lived on the streets. Others had been exploited or abused. They all proved that with compassion and support, they could overcome the trauma of their pasts and accomplish excellence. Their resilience would not allow them to give up, even when a brighter future appeared impossible. Change is often the only constant in life; these students can teach us all something about adapting, persevering and thriving through changes.

All PHS graduates passed the final exams, but the Tanzanian education ministry uses a division ranking system to determine A-level eligibility

  • 24 students are immediately qualified to attend A-level schools.
  • Peace House Africa will pay the fees for our graduates who choose to retake the exam for the 2013 school year.
  • Students opting to pursue vocational training will be eligible for assistance from PHA.
  • We will also be making micro-loans available to the graduates who plan on directly entering the workforce or beginning a small business.

As we continue towards restoring our ownership rights at the school, we are working to provide supplemental aid for the student's personal needs on campus. These simple, but vital, needs such as hygiene items, school supplies, and bus fare to get home and back over school breaks make a significant difference in the children's ability to focus on their studies. It's all thanks to the steadfast compassion of our supporters that we can sustain our mission of giving hope to Tanzania's orphaned and vulnerable children. Asante sana!
