VOLUNTEER IN TANZANIA

Volunteer program is currently on hold until Peace House Africa staff can return to campus to resume the program.

Central to Peace House Africa’s mission is the belief that personal involvement in Peace House Secondary School (PHS) provides an enriching experience for both volunteers and the children they help.  This is why Peace House Secondary School was built with volunteer accommodations right on campus and provides a variety of volunteer opportunities.

Individual Volunteers

Volunteer opportunities at PHS vary depending on your length of stay:

Short-term Volunteer:   Spend less than 15 days on the PHS campus.  Volunteers can expect to participate in student interaction during after school hours and on weekends (practicing conversational English, playing games, etc) or work on minor construction projects (i.e. gardening, painting).

Mid-term Volunteer: Spend 15 - 60 days on the PHS campus.  Volunteers can expect to do more in-depth work with students and staff in educational, extra-curricular, and/or professional areas.

Long-term Volunteer: Spend more than 60 days on the PHS campus.  Volunteers are usually retired teachers or business persons, recent college graduates, or anyone else who has the time to make a life-changing commitment to PHS.  This provides the opportunity to be immersed in multiple areas of life at PHS and build lasting working relationships with PHS students and staff.

Special Assignment Volunteer: Variable lengths of time but have a specific skill advertised as a need.   Volunteers have specific training that require a certain skill-set PHS staff may not yet have. Some examples: teaching English for a semester or providing dental care to students.

Volunteer Groups and Trips

Most volunteer work at PHS is done by groups of up to 14 participants who travel together to Tanzania.  Led by Peace House staff, groups are able to take on larger-scale projects where many hands are needed.
